Dr Ong Sze Guan is a Founding Partner & Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Eye & Retina Surgeons, Camden Medical Centre. He is also Visiting Senior Consultant, Vitreoretinal Division, Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). He is a specialist in general ophthalmology and cataract surgery and a subspecialist in vitreoretinal medicine and surgery. He was previously Head of Training and Education at Singapore National Eye Centre and Associate Clinical Professor, National University of Singapore. He was also a founding council member for the College of Ophthalmologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore and served as the President form 2009-2011. As visiting senior consultant he is still actively involved in the teaching of cataract and vitreoretinal surgery for residents and fellows at the SNEC.
Dr Ong received his ophthalmology training in Singapore and then at the Moorfields Eye Hospital (London), Tennent Institute (Glasgow) and the Bristol Eye Hospital (Bristol). He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Ophthalmologists (UK) in 1988. He subsequently commenced training in the Vitreoretinal subspecialty in Singapore and was awarded a HMDP Fellowship in Retina at the Cornell University, New York in 1992. His main areas of interest in the retina are in advanced surgical techniques and instrumentation and the surgical treatment of complicated retinal detachments, advanced diabetic retinopathy and macular diseases. His expertise also includes medical treatment of retinal conditions using anti-VEGF agents and laser photocoagulation for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and other retinal diseases.
Dr Ong is recognized regionally where he has been invited to deliver lectures and conducted numerous instructional courses on vitreoretinal surgery in the Asia Pacific region, namely, in Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China. More recently Dr Ong is Co-Chair of ESASO ASIA (European School of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology) and is responsible for organizing twice yearly medical and surgical courses for ophthalmologists and retinal specialists from the neighbouring countries. |
