Dr Ronald Yeoh is Medical Director, Founding Partner & Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Eye & Retina Surgeons, Camden Medical Centre.
Dr Yeoh provides expertise in cataract and retinal surgery. His main areas of interest are in the latest developments in standard and advanced cataract surgery, the use of ultrasound or femtosecond laser technology and the latest advanced technology intraocular lens implants. He is also a dedicated educator of the next generation of eye surgeons in Singapore and the region.
In 2013, he was nominated and elected to be a member of the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC) which is a by invitation only club, founded by the inventor of the intraocular lens, Harold Ridley decades ago.
In recognition of his efforts in teaching, in 2014, he was appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor to the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. Furthermore, in July 2015, he was elected to be President of the APACRS (Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons), the leading cataract and refractive surgery organisation in Asia which looks after the training and educational needs of half the worlds' population.
For his many contributions to ophthalmology, Dr Yeoh has received numerous awards for his efforts. They include the Distinguished Contribution to Ophthalmology Award, International Council of Ophthalmology, 1990; the Distinguished Service Award, Asia- Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, 1995; Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), Edinburgh for services to ophthalmology in Asia, 1996; the Singapore National Eye Centre Service Award, 1997; Member of Merit, Instituto Barraquer, Barcelona, Spain, 1999; and the ACE Award (APACRS Certified Educator), 2002. The award he is proudest of is the one that his students at the Singapore National Eye Centre(SNEC) voted for: Best Teacher Award at the SNEC in 2000.
He has delivered two international named lectures; The Keshmahinder Singh Oration in Kuala Lumpur in 2002 and the Lim Lecture in Beijing at the 18th Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Meeting, 2005.
Dr Yeoh also completed his Surgical Vitreoretinal Fellowship at the world renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital (London).
He was also recently promoted to the position of Adjunct Associate Professor in Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Singapore National Eye Centre in recognition of his teaching and academic activities.
Advanced Cataract Surgery
Dr Yeoh was involved in the development of small incision cataract surgery(Phaco) in Singapore and the Asia Pacific when phaco first started in Singapore in the early 90s.
Within a few years, Dr Yeoh had developed a teaching course on learning phacoemulsification cataract surgery entitled “Pearls and Pitfalls in beginning Phaco” and many young eye surgeons have been trained by him. This course has been presented all over the world, in many Asian countries and indeed was a regular fixture at the annual American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons(ASCRS) in the USA for more than 10 years. Today he runs instruction courses on femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery and makes educational films which have garnered numerous awards at film festival competitions in Asia, USA and Europe. Indeed in 2015, his educational film entitled 'Femtophaco Follies' won awards at all these three major cataract and refractive surgery meetings.
In recognition of his standing in the field of modern cataract surgery, Dr Yeoh was invited to sit on the Program Committee of the ASCRS annual meeting with his American counterparts. He also sits on Challenging and Complicated Cataract Surgery Subcommittee of the ASCRS. This subcommittee publishes guidelines on handling difficult cataract cases to the members of the ASCRS. Finally, he was one of the few Asian surgeons invited as the International Guest Judge for the San Francisco ASCRS Film Festival in 2013.
